It's A Control Issue: Signs Your Furnace Control Board Is Malfunctioning

When you think of control boards and circuit panels, you usually think of your electrical system. However, your furnace has a control board, too. Like the electrical system in your home, the control board in your furnace is responsible for maintaining the performance of an entire system. When your home electrical panel malfunctions, your electricity is interrupted. When your furnace control board malfunctions, service to your furnace is interrupted. If either control panel malfunctions, it needs to be repaired or replaced immediately. Here are three signs that your furnace control board is on the fritz. If you recognize any of the signs, it's time to contact your HVAC technician.

Temperatures are Becoming Extreme

When your furnace control board is functioning properly, your home will stay a nice comfortable, and consistent, temperature. However, once the control board begins to malfunction, you may notice that your home isn't quite as comfortable as it once was. You may notice that your rooms become overly hot, or stay uncomfortably cold, even when the thermostat seems to be working properly. If your furnace is starting to heat you out of house and home, it's time to have your control board inspected. It might have lost the ability to regulate the temperature control properly.

Furnace Sequence Isn't Being Followed

When your control board is functioning properly, your furnace will follow a specific sequence of events during its cycles. If you listen closely, you can hear those sequences being run through. For instance, the blower will come on, followed by the igniting of the burner jets, and finally, the entire system will kick into action and heat will begin to come out of the vents. When the control panel isn't working properly, it won't be able to control the sequence of events. When that happens, you may notice that the blower shuts off too quickly, or that the burner jets don't come on at the right time – or that they don't come on at all. When the proper sequence is no longer being followed, there's a strong possibility that your control board is about to suffer a catastrophic breakdown. It's time to have your furnace inspected.

Indicator Lights are Illuminated

Your car has a system of indicator lights on the dashboard that let you know when a problem is occurring. You might not know this, but your furnace also has a system of indicator lights. Those indicator lights are located on the front of the control board. If your furnace is acting up, remove the cover to the control board, and take a look. If any of the indicator lights are illuminated, contact your HVAC contractor as soon as possible. You have an issue that needs to be resolved.
