Making Your Business Count

Are You Setting Up A Home Office?

Are you a professional who can work from home? Perhaps you're simply a homemaker who wants to establish a room where you can do things like use the computer, pay bills, and file important documents. For whatever reason you are setting up a home office, from making a plan to going to a store that specializes in office furniture, here are some ideas that might help you to design a room that is both attractive and practical.

Assess Your Needs - Before you even go shopping, think of ways your home office will be used. For example, if you have a business where others will be coming for meetings, you will more than likely want to select a table and chairs where you can meet with clients and other business associates. Do you use extensive research materials, say reference books? If so, you will probably want to purchase a floor to ceiling book shelf. On the other hand, if you are a homemaker who is establishing an office in your home, you probably have the luxury of combining your at-home office with something like a guest room or a craft room. If that's the case, you can probably get away with having a computer desk, a filing cabinet and a book shelf.

Assess The Style - Once you have decided which office furniture you need, consider the style you want. For example, if you are wanting to establish a very contemporary feeling, you'll probably be looking for things like metal desks and sleek chairs of a very simple design. If you are wanting a more traditional look, then consider wooden furniture that one might actually find in other rooms of the house. For example, for a traditional look, consider buying small wing back chairs for your clients to use when you meet in your home office. When you go to a commercial office furniture store, explain to the salesperson that you are establishing an office in your home. He or she will have the experience and the training to make suggestions you may have not even thought of.

Consider putting your design on paper, even cutting out shapes that represent pieces of furniture. Use colored construction paper to cut out the shapes and put them on a piece of graph paper to see the best way to utilize the office furniture you will be buying. Don't forget to keep receipts, just in case you need to return or exchange something.
